Over the last year, I've fallen behind on all the trendy and new soap design techniques introduced into the soapy wild by talented soapmakers! The clyde slide soap design technique popularized by Clyde of Vibrant Soap is one that I'm tackling today! I love Clyde's approach to soap designs, focusing on color theory and taking artistry to a new level. The clyde slide soap design technique is basically a modified in the pot swirl, using the mechanics of a faux funnel swirl to layer the soap in the pot and then pouring into the mold.

New design techniques are not the only thing I've missed out on over the last year of living small and without a soapmaking studio! I've missed out on trying lots of new colorants released by suppliers, including the fab new cosmetic micas offered up by Bramble Berry.

This tutorial kills two birds with one stone, featuring both the clyde slide soap design technique and Bramble Berry's new Rainbow Mica sampler set! This clyde slide soap is scented with a cheery blend of lavender, citrus, and champagne. Thanks to the micas, it kicks out the perfectly Spring pop of color that matches the scent. As always, I used a palm-free soap recipe. As requested by many readers, I also ditched the babassu oil in this soap recipe to make it easier for y'all. (I'm sorry, I'm in love with babassu oil!)

This rainbow clyde slide soap recipe is sized for my SoapHutch Uber Kate mold, as that is what I used! You can resize it using a lye calculator for whichever mold works for you. As requested, I have started to add percentages to the formula & essential/fragrance oil blends for your convenience.

(If you aren’t sure how much soap your mold holds, you can find out with this guide to resizing your soap recipes to fit your mold.)

Rainbow Soap Recipe Used

  • 13.2 ounces of Coconut Oil (33% of the oils)
  • 8.8 ounces of Rice Bran Oil (22% of the oils)
  • 5.6 ounces of High Oleic Sunflower Oil (14% of the oils)
  • 4.8 ounces of Apricot Kernel Oil (12% of the oils)
  • 4.8 ounces of Cocoa Butter (12% of the oils)

  • 5.5 ounces of Sodium Hydroxide (7% lye discount/superfat)

I buy most of my soaping oils from Soaper’s Choice (Columbus Foods).

Essential & Fragrance Oil Blend Used

  • 25 grams of Bramble Berry Champagne Fragrance Oil (42% of the blend)

These essential oils are from Liberty Natural and the fragrance is from Bramble Berry, but you can use any fragrances or essential oils your heart desires.

Tips & Notes

  • The clyde slide soap design technique is so, so, so much easier with a bowl or bucket that has a spout! Without the spout, the swirl doesn't flow as nicely nor does it pour as easily into the mold. I simply don't have a bucket with a spout anymore!
  • I received a Rainbow Mica Sample Pack from Bramble Berry and was eager to test them out. However, neither of the pinks in the pack are cold process soap stable (one disappears and the other turns orange), so I used my standby: Voodoo Pink from Mad Oils.

This rainbow clyde slide soap recipe featured in this tutorial is a palm-free and vegan friendly formula. It uses a 7% superfat and a 33% lye solution. Feel free to adjust as necessary!
