Want to Build Your Own Successful soap Biz?

Want to Play? Put Me Up to a Challenge!

Lately, I’ve been totally stumbling over soapmaking. There, I said it.

I’ve been so wrapped up in Get Busy Blogging and future course plans for Modern Soapmaking, that I’ve totally lost my soapmaking mojo. For a few months now, I’ve been making soap for Gratitude Soapery and that’s about it. I’m SO uninspired.

So, I’ve been brainstorming. And last night, while doing inventory and cleaning up the workshop, I stumbled upon an idea…

Like many soapmakers, I hoard supplies. Hardcore.

I have hundreds of fragrance oil samples, hundreds of types of colorants and additives, and a vast array of soapmaking oils. Swatching and testing materials, and coming up with fresh new tutorialsĀ for the community will do that to a soapmaker’s workshop.

I’m totally not complaining – I love having such a wide variety of materials at my fingertips! Soapmakers who have been in my workshop haveĀ saidĀ they were completely and totally in awe at the vast array of ingredientsĀ I have at my disposal.

And then it dawned on me.

What if I sent Modern Soapmaking readers a little pieceĀ of my workshop so they can try and test new ingredients? What if I challenged them to step out of their comfort zone and try something new? What if I let them challenge me in return?! Two birds, one stone. I love when that happens.

Inspiration Soap ChallengeDoes that sound like fun to you?

If so, meet the firstĀ Modern Soapmaking Inspiration Challenge!

I’ve enlisted my darling husband, and he’s created thirtyĀ soapmaking inspiration kits.

Each one contains three fragrance oils and eight to twelve (!) colorants orĀ additives. Every single kit is different. (Oh, my!)

Fifteen kits contain a challenge, from simple to complex.Ā Challenges include things like:Ā Make a batch of soap using two ingredients from this kit,Ā Create a mantra swirl soap using only colorants from this kit, or Craft a batch of soap using this color palette and one of the ingredientsĀ from this kit.

The other fifteen kits? They contain the ingredients, but no challenge. Why’s that? Because you get to challenge me.Ā (What am I getting myself into here?!)Ā It’s okay, I like a challenge!

Want to play?

Update: The Challenge is already full up! Oh my! If you submitted your entry after the initial 15, I’m still sending you a little goodie in your mailbox. Keep your eyes peeled!

Here’s how it works!

  1. Sign up and give me my challenge.Ā Tell me what colors or a design technique or an additive or something! Specific or not, it’s up to you – I make what you tell me to. šŸ˜‰
  2. You’ll receive one random soapmaking kit in the mail from my right hand minion husband. Inside, you will find new ingredients to play with, and aĀ challenge to complete. (My husband came up with these, but I gave him guidelines. :P)
  3. Complete theĀ challenge batch of soap by August 1, andĀ post the link to your creation on this blog post in the comments. I’ll share it on myĀ Facebook page and Twitter.
  4. In turn, I’ll snag a kit and make up a batch of soap completing the challenge you give me. I’ll share a tutorial or video of me making the challenge soap right here on Modern Soapmaking, and link you up again in that post.

Free ingredients to try? Check. Putting meĀ up to a challenge? Oh my! *gulp* Yup.Ā A little link love and exposure? Heck yes. More Modern Soapmaking tutorials + videos for everyone? The best part!

If you sign up and never complete your challenge, I won’t complete yours either. (Neener neener.)Ā The community is counting on you! Please, do not sign up if you don’t plan on participating!

If you want to play, you must:

  • Be a soapmaker in the United States. (Sorry, but shipping is totally killer.)
  • Have a blog, YouTube channel, or Facebook page where you can share your creation.
  • Create your soap challenge batch by August 1, 2014 and post a link to itĀ right here in the comments.

There are only fifteen kits to send out, so make sure you sign up if you want to play!Ā Let’s do this!

Update: The Challenge is already full up! Oh my! If you submitted your entry after the initial 15, I’m still sending you a little goodie in your mailbox. Keep your eyes peeled!

    1. Sorry, Mylisais! Postage is a killer. If all goes well, maybe we’ll do again with an option for peeps to pay their shipping or something! šŸ™‚

  1. Why not create a fun challenge for those of us not in the US and we can participate with supplies we have on hand with no cost to you? Just brainstorming here.

    1. I love it! šŸ™‚ I’m glad you got to check out new ingredients and have a couple new vendors to consider. šŸ™‚ That was my goal with the challenge: inspiration and sharing!
