Y’all know how important it is to me to keep our products environmentally sound and to reduce my impact on our Earth. Our tag line wouldn’t be “Luxury skincare with your skin (and our planet!) in mind” if I didn’t! One major thing that comes into play with selling online is the astronomical amount of shipping waste that is produced by the vast network of companies who sell online and ship worldwide. That’s not something I want to contribute to! Que my eco-friendly shipping practices!
Eco-Friendly Shipping via USPS
From the beginning, I decided to ship via USPS only. Why? Because the USPS already delivers mail to all US addresses, so additional trips by other carriers such as FedEx, UPS, DHL, and the like are not needed. All those delivery vehicles running around the country nonstop produce a lot of pollution, and while I can’t change that, I can choose to use a service that is likely going to be hitting up your front doorstep on a daily basis anyways! I will ship via those methods if requested by a customer, but I always default to the USPS because I think it is more of an eco friendly shipping option.
Eco-Friendly Shipping with EcoEnclose
For several months now, I have been using eco-friendly shipping supplies from EcoEnclose. The customer feedback has been awesome, and I’m glad y’all like them as much as I do. They are slightly more expensive than traditional shipping supplies, but I think they are totally worth it!
We use the Biodegradable Bubble Mailers in various sizes, but the most common sizes you’ll find your order in is a 6×9 mailer or 7×11 mailer. The 6×9 mailer is perfect for one or two bar orders, and the 7×11 size will fit up to four or five bars of soap.
These mailers are the best quality I have encountered when looking for eco-friendly shipping supplies, and they have a lot to shout about, here are all the snazzy features from the EcoEnclose website:
- Will completely biodegrade within 5-60 months.
- Returns to the earth as humus and biomass.
- Will break down in composting or in LANDFILLS!
- Features a handy tear strip for easy opening.
- Double adhesive strip that allows reuse before disposal.
- Lined with 3/16″ biodegradable bubble cushioning.
- Are guaranteed to maintain integrity in storage and in use.
- Durable, moisture, tear and tamper resistant.
- Made in the USA!
My favorite thing? I’ve heard reports back from many customers who have saved their mailers to re-use them, thanks to the handy double adhesive strip that allows the mailers to be re-used. The fact that they are made here in the USA, instead of being shipped in from China or another far-flung country is a total bonus.
I don’t use any of the larger size mailers, because of the great padded flat rate envelopes the USPS provides. However, even larger orders get packed up in boxes to product the product. You know where those boxes come from? They’re recycled, o’course.
All boxes I receive from supply orders and the like get cut down and re-used to send out large orders. I do keep a small selection of 100% recycled cardboard boxes from EcoEnclose on hand just in case I need them, though! And all the packing material I use? Yup, you guessed it – recycled! I store all the packing peanuts, bubble wrap, and air packs from my incoming shipments to re-use with outgoing shipments. And when I get low, I often find myself with the wonderful advantage of having family and friends who save their packing materials, too. In the year and a half that Amathia Soapworks has been in business, I have yet to purchase any packaging materials new!
Last but not least, I’m sure you’ve noticed I’m a bit of a tape-a-holic. I want to make sure your order reaches you safe and sound, so I usually tape any packaging seams as well as taping the shipping label (which is printed on post-consumer recycled paper!) to the outgoing package. Well, that’s got a leg-up, too! I use EcoEnclose’s shipping tape which is made with a renewable plant based adhesive right here in the USA. The biggest complaint I’ve had about similar tape is that, well, they don’t stick or they look cheap. EcoEnclose tape? Nope! Can’t tell the difference between their tape and any other major brand shipping tape out there.
Going green with eco-friendly shipping supplies was easier than I thought it would be – once I found the right products. I really can’t recommend EcoEnclose enough to fellow micro-businesses who ship a lot of their product. Even if you don’t own a business, but ship a lot of packages to friends and family, it’s well worth it to order a small bundle of mailers from EcoEnclose to keep on hand. Seriously, y’all, check them out and do the math, there’s no excuses to not take your shipping to green levels!
p.s. Their customer service is just as awesome as their products. 😉
